Wolf + Lamb interview (the first 100 posts!)

Hello all,

We celebrate 100 posts with an exclusive for Greece Wolf + Lamb interview i did a couple of months ago.
I believe it is Zev Einsberg who is answering those questions.

When and why did you started Wolf + Lamb?

Wolf + Lamb started as name for Gadi and I to DJ in New York under. After about a year we decided we wanted more control over the aesthetics and feeling of the shows, so we we started a series of parties under the same name… after a few years, we got tired of dealing with venues so we opened the Marcy Hotel, our venue, under the same name. After we started producing music, we began our record label, also under, you guessed it, the same name!

Which is the sound you represent and why you choose it. Give me some key facts and releases related to Wolf + Lamb.

We actually represent the slower, sexier side of dance music in general. We have no official sound, and what we do put out changes in mood and style all the time. Our latest record, Nicolas Jaar’s ‘Time for Us’ is so slow it hardly even enters into dance music at all!

What is going on with the Marcy Hotel and how different do you find Europe in opposite of New York.

Nothing now, it’s on a break. The only real difference is there are a lot more people into it, instead of one or two parties you have 10 in London. It really depends where in Europe you are, but the feeling at the Marcy can easily be anywhere in the world.

Tim Paris promo vol. 2 – The Interview

Exclusive interview that could also be read in its Greek version at avopolis.gr

1.Your production and dj career goes back in the time. Tell us a bit how everything started.

The end of the nineties was a vibrating moment in Paris where so many styles were covered by great producers. Weekly you could come across parties with artists like Daft Punk, Air, Laurent Garnier, Dj Deep, Ivan Smagghe, Chloe…and everything was super fresh and exciting: I took that train with great enthusiasm and infinite expectations.

2.What was the idea behind Fine Line project and then Marketing Music.

“it’s a fine line” came in reaction towards the standardisation of the music we were offered to play as DJs. We felt there was room to try and sound a bit different, reason why some people will certainly dislike a lot how we sound ! But we tend to browse as many styles as possible and from one track to another they might tell a complete different story with different words.

For Marketing Music, it is Jef.K who, back a few years ago, pushed me to create an imprint which will stand for my vision of music. The idea was to sign people close to me as I started to have a nice network of producers as good friends. The label really tries to keep a high versatility, to associate catchy melody with quality production…it is very hard to find, reason why there aren’t so many releases.

3.Which are the elements that a record has to have in order to sign it for your label.

It has to stands out, I wish every release would have something specific to tell. The name ‘Marketing’ is obviously a joke, I’m not very keen with the idea of releasing a couple of tracks and then bringing on 2 remixers just to add some ‘names’ and commercial appeal. A track is good or not, a remix won’t make it better.
I also tend to be extra careful with the sound of the releases, not that it needs to be Hi-fidelity but the production skills is an element of composition in electronic music.

4. Is there any rules that you follow or a concept that describes the way you dj and produce records.

The only rule in music is pleasure. This what makes you want to do more, to work on it: you like a sound then you mix it with another one and it’s even better. When you enjoy listening to your music then you may assume some other people will like to do the same.
As for deejaying it is exactly the same process: if one Dj enjoys his session then he will transfers it to the crowd. Music is a medium to communicate emotions, ideally you want to transmit good feelings…but that the rough idea then there has to be subtilities in your message.
Sadly in Electronic music, the more accurate and subtle you get and the less ‘commercial’ you become.

5.Named us five interesting records that you listened the last 3 months. And a top 5 with your all time favorites dance records.

-Dopplereffekt ‘Calabi Yau Space’

An album I missed a couple of year ago when it was released. I’m a total fan of their music. It has everything : great ideas, fantastic production, unconventionnal formats and that ‘Detroit’ feel which is my favorite influence in electronic.

-Luciano Berio ‘Sinfonia’ (3rd movement)

An incredible piece of music I recently discovered. Written in the 60s, this part of the piece is a collage of some others works. It’s like if he has been sampling some other scores to create a new one. It must have required hours and hours of very complicated work to insert all these elements in correct place and pitch. Moreover it sounds marvellous.

-The next LP from Chloe who shall be out on KillTheDj soon. Don’t miss it !

-Underground Resistance ‘Waveform E.P’ (UR 004)
-Cybotron ‘Clear’ (Metroplex)
-Mr Negative ‘Feel The Love’ (Crack&Speed)
-Closer Musik ’1,2,3…Floating’ (Kompakt)
-Konrad Black ‘Don’t look Back’  (Wagon Repair)

6.Descibe a typical day of yours in London.

I wake up super early to complete my sport session. Then breakfast at home, and I will normally spend the whole morning working on music theory and keyboard. Afternoon will be dedicated to production at the studio.
